The story of the SPANNAGEL family ...

In 1598, Jean SPANNAGEL is the first person bearing the family name to be mentioned in connection with Katzenthal. The Spannagels have worked with wine and vineyards, as wine-growers, tasters and coopers for four centuries…

In the 17th century they rented vineyards from the barons of Ratsamhausen, at the foot of the old "château of Wineck". During the 17th and 18th centuries, they also held the position of Bourgmestre (Mayor) of Katzenthal as well as that of Provost of the Hohlandsbourg domain at Katzenthal and Niedermorschwihr, the neighbouring village.

In 1897 Joseph SPANNAGEL, wine-grower and wine taster, built the house that still stands today at 1, Grand Rue, in Katzenthal.

In 1900, Xavier SPANNAGEL sells his wine in the market squares of Colmar, Strasbourg and Mulhouse.

1923, Henri SPANNAGEL continues in the wine-growing tradition, despite the severe impact the First World War has had on Katzenthal.

In 1960, Marie-Thérèse and Paul SPANNAGEL develop on-site bottling and selling direct to the public in their role as Wine-grower-harvesters.

Today, the same spirit of perseverance leads Claudine and Yves SPANNAGEL to remain in the wine-growing tradition and to treat their land, vines and wine with the passion and respect they deserve.
